Biography
Chow Chun Fai was born in 1980 in Hong Kong. He graduated with a BFA and MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he currently teaches painting. Apart from his artistic practice, Fai is also politically active in his role as the chairman of Fotanian Artist Village. In 2012, he ran unsuccessfully for a cultural post in the Hong Kong Legislative Council Election. His work focuses on Hong Kong history, society and popular culture. In his “Painting on Movies” series he paints film stills and subtitles from classic Hong Kong movies in order to explore aspects of Hong Kong’s complex and fluxing identity. Chow Chun Fai’s recent solo exhibitions include CHOW CHUN FAI, Eli Klein Gallery, New York, NY (2018); Everything comes with an expiry date, Klein Sun Gallery, New York, NY (2016); CHOW Chun Fai: I Have Nothing to Say, Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong (2015); and Cultural Rights-Artist Running An Election, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong (2013). His work has been shown internationally, including in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, the UK, Mainland China and in Australia. It was selected for ‘Chinese Whispers: Recent Art from the Sigg und M+ Sigg Collections’, Kunstmuseum Bern, and ‘Venice Meeting Point’, Arsenale Venice, Venice, Italy (both 2015) and for the Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, United Kingdom (2012). Chow Chun Fai lives and works in Hong Kong.
